Nothing quite compares to that sinking feeling you get when the red and blue lights start flashing in your mirror. Thought I would share my little NYPD story from a few hours ago with you Oppos who are still awake....

Around 3AM I went out to move my Mustang to a better parking spot, which is the kind of ridiculous bullshit you do when you live in a Brooklyn neighborhood with late night parking rules. I knew exactly where I wanted to park, so to save a little time and avoid going around the block to get down the one way street on the corner, I started to slowly back across the intersection. As I was doing this I looked in the mirror and I saw the unmistakable silhouette of a light bar on top of the approaching car. Whoops. I put it in first and slowly eased up to the next red light. The NYPD squad car pulled up weirdly close. Felt aggressive. After what seemed like three or four years the light finally turned green and I turned left. The cop was glued to my bumper and I just knew I was getting pulled over. The lights went on. Damn it.

5 minutes ago I was on my very comfortable warm couch watching Better Call Saul and struggling to keep my eyes open. Now here I am, sitting in the cold, hoping that I'm about to be only sternly warned about how intersections work, but mentally resigning myself to a good tazing. I rolled down the windows, put both hands on the wheel, and waited for the electricity to start coursing through my body. But then I got a surprise.

"You didn't do anything wrong. I like your car," the cop said through my window. "So, where are those other wheels you usually have?"

Turns out the cop is the owner of another Mustang I always see in the neighborhood. A nice 2012 5.0, just like mine, except silver. I'd often wondered if I would ever run into owner, but didn't expect it would be like this. I got out and we met and shook hands and talked about Mustangs for a while. He knew enough about my car that he knew I was running my winter wheels, and had questions for me about the Forgestars I use in the summer.

Whew.

What kind of neighbourhood makes you move your car at 3am?

Don't mind me. I'm just going to pull you over against your will.

It's awful. What kind of world do we live in where the police can do stuff like this and get away with it? They should be out shooting black kids, not being interested in our cars.

It's abuse of power. If a cop wants to pull up next to me at a light to chat about my car, that's fine. I'll probably toss him/her the keys and help them find a parking lot. Forcibly pulling someone over is a different thing entirely.

Oh no, so much oppression. A cop can legally pull you over at any time. That's part of the job. Especially when he did something illegal in front of the cop.

haha that's awesome! I had a similar thing happen to me over the summer. NYPD car pulled up next to me at a stoplight, rolled down his window and said over the PA for me to do the same. Thought I blew a stopsign or something but he goes "Nice car man, got a tune on it at all? I heard that wakes those ST's up!" And we chatted (even after the light turned green cause nobody's gonna honk at a cop car). He asked me to do a full throttle start so he could see the speed onto the cross island on-ramp, so I did. Awesome guys.

I am just waiting for the day my sister, father or my self get pulled over for driving the Figaro. People have run up to me in intersections to ask what it is.

Not to pour cold water on the story, but the "just wanted to see the car" thing is sometimes used as a cover so they can just make sure you are on the up-and-up. This cop seemed to know the car but it was being driven strangely at 3AM in Brooklyn. I'd say he wanted to see if something was suspicious and when it was you (the owner) he realized he could relax.

Had this happen a few times. And been told this from a number of different cops in different places. They know not to light up for no reason.

A couple months ago I was on my way to work and the light turns yellow and immediately red as I was about to go through...literally just shifted up into 3rd as I was hitting the intersection.

Cops were pulling over people for going through the red and I absolutely saw him as I was going through.

"We're just giving warnings today because the neighbors have been complaining about people going through the light."

Comes back.

"So how you like the ST? Quick, huh?"

"Uhhh...yeah..."

"I'm looking into the hot hatch segment...not sure what I want to do. May go with a used Mazdaspeed3 but I really like the WRX."

"What about the GTI?"

"My partner hates VW for some reason but I'm going to give it a shot without telling him. I'll have to give this a shot, too. How's it do overall?"

"MPG isn't as advertised because of the turbo...don't know how they tested these things."

"I'm really looking forward to some test drives now. Hey, take it easy."

"You too. Good luck with your search."

Blew some of my friends minds because the town's cops are supposed to be assholes. I liked this guy.

A lot of places in NY have dumb ass parking rules that are like 2-6 or similar. That's how it is where I am and it's a pain in the ass so best to do is just park on the side ahead of time.

We also have dumbass rules. 3 hour limit between 7am-7pm anywhere in the city. Signs, no signs doesnt matter.

That's understandable. This is like 2-6 AM you're supposed to park on a certain side of the road depending on the day is even/odd. It's annoying, the one day you forget, here's a parking ticket.
